Indian Movies BANNED in India


Now is the time to find out 11 Indian Movies banned in India for various reasons. Most of these bans happened due to public outrage or because of Government interference. Censor board usually pass the movie with cuts and certificates but in many cases many Bollywood Hindi Films and film in many Indian languages face outrage by certain section of society or Government intolerance of criticism. Some of these movies were later released after either Court Decision or Change in Leadership or after cuts.
1. Aandhi
It was first big Indian Movie banned in India. It was banned during Emergency by Indira Gandhi and subsequently released in 1977 after Janata Party came into power. Indira Gandhi thought that the character of politician Aarti Devi played by Suchitra Sen was her portrayal and she took the benefit of Emergency to ban the movie altogether.




2. Kissa Kursi Ka
Kissa Kursi Ka was a political spoof made in 1977 (Emergency Period). The film was banned by the Congress government for lampooning the Emergency. The master prints and all copies was lifted from the Censor Board office and burned by Sanjay Gandhi supporters. The movie was later remade with a different cast. This was second instance when Government Interfered in releasing a movie. Anyway, That was Period of Emergency in India.

3. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
One of the first Hollywood Movies banned in India. A Blockbuster Hollywood action Film which was banned temporarily for its “negative” depiction of Indians. The ban was later removed.

4. Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love
India is the inventor of Kama Sutra. Our “Modern Society” and “Ideology” don’t like to talk about it. The film released in 1196 but faced ban. It was banned due to its sexual content. Late the version released in India had 2 minute cut of nudity.

5. Fire
Fire is another name in list of Indian Movies banned in India. It was passed by censor board after proper certification. But on its opening day in India, some film theaters were attacked by Hindu fundamentalists for depicting a lesbian relationship. The film was withdrawn and sent to back to the Censor Board but later it released uncut. This was One of those Indian Movie Banned in India because of Fundamentalist Outrages.

6. Hawayein
Hawayein was set against the backdrop to the 1984 Sikh genocide. It was passed by censor board but movie faced outrages of public especially in state of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Jammu Kashmir.

7. The Pink Mirror

10. 50 Shades of Grey
50 Shades of Grey is British-American erotic romantic drama film based on the International best selling novel of same name. But when makers asked for a release in India, it was not given a rating by the Censor Board, even after voluntary cuts by the distributor. At the end makers of the film decided not to release movie in India.

11. Unfreedom
The story revolves around a Muslim fundamentalist in New York who kidnaps a liberal Muslim scholar with an intent to kill, while a closeted lesbian in New Delhi kidnaps her bisexual lover with the intent to love. You may think that because of Public Outrage this movie was banned. But no, The film was denied a rating by the CBFC and the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal and they decided no one should watch this movie.
Raj Amit Kumar states that the Censor Board should rate or certify a movie, instead of banning and offering cuts. He also said that he would keep sending signed petitions to the Prime Minister and Censor Board, until there is a real change. The director is seeking support from people who believe in freedom of speech.

So this is a list of Indian Movies Banned in India. There are many Bollywood Films, Tamil Films and many other language movie which faced ban in certain states or area. Like Jodha Akbar was banned in Madhya Pradesh until Supreme Court ruled against it.Banned Films In India
